Firewall of antivirus providers may limit internet access of Muute

Muute needs access to the internet in order to work correctly. Some antivirus providers will prevent Muute from connecting to the internet. In this article you will learn how to solve this problem.

In some cases, antivirus or firewall software may block Muute from accessing the internet. This can be due to Muute being a new application for the antivirus, which will cause it restrict functionalities by default.

Because Muute locksdown your device when Muute is used, you cannot interact with system-level popups (such as antivirus permission dialogs). This means that if an antivirus prompts for permission to allow/deny network access, the prompt cannot be accepted during an active session, causing Muute to malfunction.

Symptoms

You may encounter this issue if:

  • Muute fails to load or connect during usage of the app
  • The application appears offline despite a working internet connection
  • No visible error message appears within Muute
  • You suddenly see a black screen while using Muute
  • You suddenly see all your applications except Muute
  • Your device suddenly becomes unusable and needs a full reboot in order to correctly function again

Cause

Some antivirus programs (such as Norton and ESET) may block Muute’s network access by default. Normally, these programs display a popup asking whether to allow the application, but this popup is inaccessible while Muute is running.

Solution

To resolve this issue, you must manually add Muute as an allowed application (exception) in your antivirus or firewall settings before starting the Muute app. Make sure to reboot to correctly apply the new rules.

Required Allowlist Entries

Ensure the following executable files are allowed:

  • C:\Program Files\muute\muute.exe
  • C:\Program Files\muute\service\muute-helper-service.exe

Make sure to also enabled 'automatic' mode in the Firewall settings to prevent manually approving network access for Muute.

Other antivirus products

If you use a different antivirus product not listed here, please check the settings of your antivirus product. Search for 'network filtering', 'firewall', 'internet block' or similar settings and add an exception for Muute. You can also try to temporarily disable the antivirus and firewall (and possibly reboot the device) to check if this solves the problem. A permanent solution can only be achieved by correctly configuring antivirus to add an exception for Muute.
