Windows S-mode and Muute — What You Need to Do
Some Windows laptops are shipped with Windows S-mode enabled. This version of Windows is limited to installing software only from the Microsoft Store. Because of this, devices in S-mode cannot install standard desktop applications — including the Muute app — so Muute will not run unless S-mode is turned off.
Why This Happens
Windows in S-mode prioritises security and performance by restricting installations to Microsoft Store apps. While this can be useful for general safety, it prevents you from installing the Muute application on your device.
Important Note
Turning off Windows S-mode is permanent — after you switch out of S-mode you cannot go back to it later.
How to Turn Off Windows S-mode (Windows 10 & Windows 11)
Follow the steps below to deactivate Windows S-mode so you can install and run Muute:
-
Open Windows Settings
Click the Start button (Windows logo) and then select the Settings icon (the gear), or press Windows + I on your keyboard. -
Navigate to Activation
-
On Windows 10: Go to Update & Security > Activation.
-
On Windows 11: Go to System > Activation.
-
-
Go to the Microsoft Store
In the Activation section, find the option that says something like Switch out of S-mode or Go to the Store, and click it. -
Switch Out of S-mode
The Microsoft Store will open. On the S-mode switch page, click the Get button to begin the process. You may be asked to sign in with your Microsoft account. -
Wait for the Change to Complete
Windows will apply the change and exit S-mode. After this finishes, your PC will operate like a standard Windows installation without S-mode restrictions.
After Switching Out of S-mode
Once S-mode is turned off:
-
You can install Muute and other third-party applications normally from the web or installers.
-
Your device won’t be limited to Microsoft Store apps.
If you continue to have trouble installing Muute after completing these steps, check that your Windows is updated and that your device meets all system requirements. If needed, contact your organization for further help.
